Yemen's Defense Minister Discusses Red Sea Situation with Russian Delegation

16 February

Yemeni Defense Minister Mohsen al-Daeri met with a Russian delegation in Aden, including Alexander Kinshchak, Director of the Middle East and North Africa Department of the Russian Foreign Ministry, and Evgeny Kudrov, Russian Chargé d'affaires in Yemen. The meeting was reported on the Yemeni government's website.

The parties discussed the national situation in the context of terrorist-Houthi attacks on sea routes in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden, and their impact on regional and global security.

Al-Daeri emphasized that supporting the legitimate government of Yemen is the most effective way to ensure the security of shipping routes. The Russian delegation expressed concern about the situation in the Red Sea and reiterated support for diplomatic efforts to achieve peace and end the war in Yemen.

On January  25, the Russian Foreign Ministry stated that Deputy Foreign Minister, Presidential Special Envoy for the Middle East and Africa Mikhail Bogdanov received a delegation from the Ansar Allah movement. They discussed the escalation of the conflict in the Gaza Strip and the worsening situation in the Red Sea, condemning US and British strikes on Yemen.

Since mid-November, the Houthis have targeted civilian vessels in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden, leading Ansar Allah to warn against Israeli territory strikes and blockade of Red Sea and Bab el-Mandeb Strait shipping until the Gaza operation ceases.

In response, the US formed an international coalition and initiated Operation Prosperity Guardian to secure navigation and ship security in the Red Sea. On January 12, US and British forces conducted their first joint strikes on Houthi facilities in Yemen, targeting missile and drone sites, as well as rebel radar stations.
