Yerevan applied to Minsk group to negotiate peace agreement with Baku

14 March 2022

Armenia turned to the OSCE Minsk Group to organize negotiations for signing a peace agreement with Azerbaijan, the republic's MFA said in a statement on Monday.

"Armenia responded to Azerbaijan's proposals and appealed to the co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group to organize negotiations on the conclusion of a peace treaty between the Republic of Armenia and the Republic of Azerbaijan on the basis of the UN Charter, the Helsinki Final Act and the International Charter on Political and Civil Rights," the statement reads.

Earlier, Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Ceyhun Bayramov told journalists that Baku handed over a five-point proposal for the normalization of relations to Yerevan.

Earlier, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan has repeatedly stated that after the hostilities in Nagorno-Karabakh in autumn 2020, his cabinet is ready to open an era of peace in the region. To this end, Yerevan intends to sign a peace treaty with Azerbaijan, as well as to normalize relations with Turkey.

Despite these statements, the situation on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border and the line of contact in Nagorno-Karabakh remains tense. On March 8, an Armenian soldier was killed by gunfire on the border, and last Thursday a local resident was wounded in Nagorno-Karabakh.
