Yerevan says Baku violates 2020 statement by establishing checkpoint in Lachin corridor

24 April 2023

Azerbaijan's establishing the checkpoint in the Lachin corridor is a blatant violation of the trilateral 2020 statement and aims to carry out ethnic cleansing in Nagorno-Karabakh, the Armenian foreign ministry said in a statement on Sunday.

"On April 23, the Azerbaijani authorities, in flagrant violation of the 6 point of the trilateral statement of November 9, 2020, have already officially blocked the Lachin corridor by taking measures to set up a checkpoint in the corridor in the zone of responsibility of the Russian peacekeeping forces. This step is a blatant violation of one of the fundamental points of the trilateral statement of November 9 and is aimed at persistent policy of ethnic cleansing of Nagorno-Karabakh and forced withdrawal of the Armenian population from Nagorno-Karabakh," the statement of the MFA reads.

The Ministry emphasized that being a signatory to the November 9 trilateral statement, Armenia considers this step of Azerbaijan unacceptable and strongly condemns it, aimed at disrupting the negotiations on the document on the settlement of relations between Armenia and Azerbaijan.

The republic's foreign ministry also called on the Russian Federation to fulfill its obligations under the Nov. 9, 2020 - trilateral statement and ensure the withdrawal of Azerbaijani forces from the Lachin corridor.

"We call on the Russian Federation to finally fulfill its obligation under the sixth point of the trilateral statement by removing the illegal blockade of the corridor and ensuring the withdrawal of Azerbaijani forces from the entire security zone of the Lachin corridor," the statement said.
