Maria Zakharova, spokeswoman for the Russian Foreign Ministry, asserted that the current turmoil in the Middle East stems from another falied venture by Washington. She emphasized the need of preventing further escalation in the region, stressing the necessity for the UN Security Council to intervene to mitigate tensions.
"We firmly believe that the situation must not be provoked into further escalation. Efforts should be directed towards activating the UN Security Council," Zakharova stated during the program "Evening with Vladimir Solovyov" on Rossiya-1.
Zakharova said that the functioning of the UN Security Council is currently impeded by the stance of certain nations, which hinder the utilization of its resources.
Pointing to the recent Israeli assault on the Iranian consulate in Damascus, Zakharova condemned it as an attack on a diplomatic facility entitled to immunity under the Vienna Conventions. "The Security Council was obligated to denounce it," she remarked, lamenting the failure to reach a unanimous condemnation due to Western opposition.
Zakharova accused the US of advancing unsubstantiated claims regarding non-binding UNSC resolutions, aiming to isolate Israel from accountability under international law to serve its own interests. She contended that this approach has exacerbated the situation, resulting in unprecedented turmoil in the region.
"The Middle East has witnessed wars before, but never on this scale of explosive volatility, despite its history and the evident consequences," Zakharova concluded, attributing the crisis to yet another failed US endeavor.
