02 June 2020

Events in the U.S. related to the protests after the death of African-American George Floyd are the real "American tragedy" of today, Maria Zakharova, the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, announced this in the program "Evening with Vladimir Soloviev" on Russia 1.

"There's no gloat (in terms of the situation in the United States - editor's note), there's no feeling, except for one thing - understanding that we're witnessing the real tragedy, that's the very American tragedy of today,"  the diplomat said in particular.

"After the actions of both the police and journalists, and attempts to manipulate public opinion through the mass media, again, attempts to find an external enemy, blaming each other and others, after this chaos, it seems to me that the United States simply can't have any questions for other (countries)  the next few years," said the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry.

For his part, Senator Alexei Pushkov expressed the opinion that the U.S. has entered a time of "turmoil".

"The U.S. is beginning to fall apart. It can be seen in Syria and Afghanistan, on the disaster with COVID-19 in the USA itself, on the inability to help the European allies in the peak of the pandemic, on hysterical but inaudible accusations against China, on racial rebellion, on internal split. The U.S. has entered a time of turmoil," he wrote on Twitter in particular.

A wave of protests and riots broke out in the United States after the death in Minneapolis of African-American George Floyd. There are videos on the Internet showing that the police handcuffed Floyd, threw him down, and one of them stepped on his neck with his knee. Floyd in the video says he can't breathe a few times, then he stops. The man died in I.C.U.

After the start of the riots in the U.S., four policemen were fired, and one of them was charged with murder by negligence. A number of cities in the U.S. have imposed curfews in connection with the protests,  rubber bullets and tear gas injure not only the protesters but also the media.
