Zakharova: Russia calls for return of US embassy building seized in Yemen to owners

18 November 2021

Russia condemns any violation of diplomatic inviolability and hopes that the US embassy building in Yemen, which was seized by Houthis (supporters of the rebel Ansar Allah movement), will be returned to its owners, Russia's Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova told a briefing on Wednesday.

According to the diplomat, Russia drew attention to the State Department's widely circulated statement in the media about the invasion of the country's embassy building in Sana'a, as well as the arrest of local staff working there.

"We hope that the building of the American diplomatic mission in the Yemen capital will be returned to its owners, and the local authorities will continue to protect it, as they have been doing for the last six years," she noted.

The Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman also stressed that Moscow strongly condemns any violation of the immunity and inviolability of diplomatic institutions and attacks on their staff, no matter what country it happens in.

According to the Daily Mail, the Houthis attacked and seized the US embassy in Yemen on November 11. The attack resulted in the capture of 25 employees of the diplomatic mission, all of them Yemeni citizens. The US embassy in Sana'a had ceased to function since 2015.
