Zakharova: Russia calls on Baku and Yerevan to refrain from revanchist rhetoric

22 April 2021

Russia calls on Azerbaijan and Armenia to refrain from militaristic rhetoric and the desire to take revenge in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, as this can lead to the aggravation of the situation in the region. Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said this at a briefing on Thursday.

"We call on the sides [Baku and Yerevan] to refrain from revanchist and militaristic rhetoric that could again bring the region to the brink of war," she said.

Zakharova stressed that Azerbaijan and Armenia should take practical steps in line with the trilateral agreements reached at the talks in Moscow in November 2020 and January 2021. The diplomat added that the issue of unblocking economic and transport ties in the region should be resolved in accordance with this logic.

Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev said in a televised interview on Tuesday that Baku would achieve the creation of the Zangezur corridor regardless of Armenia's wishes, and if it resists, it will be ready to resolve the issue by force. The Armenian Foreign Ministry condemned these statements, noting that they seriously damage regional peace and stability.
