Zakharova: Russia strongly condemns US airstrikes on Syria

26 February 2021

Russia strongly condemns the US airstrikes near the Syrian-Iraqi border on the night of February 26, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova said at a briefing on Friday.

"We strongly condemn such actions. We call for unconditional respect for Syria's sovereignty and territorial integrity. We confirm our rejection of any attempts to turn Syrian territory into an arena for settling geopolitical scores," she said.

The US launched airstrikes near the Syrian-Iraqi border on the night of February 26. The Pentagon said it was in response to recent attacks in Iraq against members of the US and the coalition with which it was conducting an operation against IS (banned in Russia). The targets were allegedly targets of pro-Iranian groups, including Qataib Hezbollah and Qataib Seyyed al-Shuhada. The Syrian State Television and Radio described Washington's actions as aggression, saying there were no casualty reports. The Saudi channel Al-Hadath reported the deaths of 17 members of pro-Iranian formations.
