14 October 2021

Moscow expects a representative delegation from the Taliban (banned in the Russian Federation) to come next week to participate in consultations on Afghanistan in the Moscow format, Russian foreign ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said at a briefing on the margins of the III Eurasian Women's Forum on Thursday.

"Next week we expect a representative Taliban delegation to come to Moscow to participate in the third meeting of the Moscow format of consultations on Afghanistan," Zakharova said.

The Russian foreign ministry spokeswoman stressed that Moscow is concerned about the non-decreasing terrorist activity of ISIS (banned in Russia) fighters in the territory of Afghanistan. We believe that the words of the new Kabul authorities about their ability to cope with ISIS on their own, without external support, will be put into practice," the diplomat said. - "We also paid attention to the two-day visit to Qatar of a Taliban delegation led by the acting Afghan foreign minister. Talks were held there, including with representatives of the US State Department".

The Moscow format meeting is scheduled for October 20. The format was created in 2017 on the basis of a six-party consultation mechanism of special representatives of Russia, Afghanistan, India, Iran, China and Pakistan.
