Zakharova: the Palestinian problem is among the key factors of instability in the Middle East

14 February 2020

The unresolved Palestinian issue remains one of the key factors of instability in the Middle East, Maria Zakharova, an official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, told reporters.

The plan for a Palestinian-Israeli settlement, known as the "deal of the century", released by the United States, according to her, cannot become the basis for resolving the issue, since it does not take into account the main elements of the generally recognized international legal framework for the Middle East peace process and the Arab Peace Initiative.

US President Donald Trump announced the details of the "deal of the century" on January 28. According to the document, Jerusalem is recognized as the capital of Israel, and Palestine becomes an independent but demilitarized state, effectively deprived of control over its borders.

As the future capital of Palestine, the plan proposes the village of Abu Dis in the Eastern suburbs of Jerusalem, located behind a security fence.

Palestine categorically rejected the US plan. Statements about the document's unacceptability were made by the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, the Arab League and the European Union.
