Zakharova: the resolution of the UNGA Committee on Crimea is of a biased nature

19 November 2020

The draft resolution on Crimea, adopted at the initiative of Ukraine at the UN, is politically motivated. This was stated on Thursday at a briefing by the Director of the Department of Information and Press of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova.

"On November 18, the Third Committee of the 75th session of the UN General Assembly adopted by voting a draft resolution on the human rights situation in Crimea initiated by Ukraine," she said. - "As in previous years, this resolution is politically motivated and has nothing to do with the real situation on the peninsula. Once again Ukraine has used the UN platform to replicate its groundless political and territorial claims to Crimea".

In this regard, the official representative of the diplomatic mission reminded that "the issue of territorial belonging of the Republic of Crimea and the city of Sevastopol once and for all resolved by its residents at a referendum in March 2014". "The referendum was held in strict compliance with the norms of international law," she stressed. - "It is all the more inappropriate to raise the issue of belonging of certain territories in the Third Committee of the UNGA, where only social, cultural, humanitarian and human rights issues are discussed".

According to Zakharova, the highly politicized nature of the resolution "is also confirmed by the fact that the number of abstaining delegations and those who voted against exceeds the number of those who supported this document". "Besides, she pointed out, "a number of states preferred not to participate in voting at all, thus demonstrating their negative attitude directly to the Ukrainian idea".
