Zakharova: the US initiative to restore anti-Iranian sanctions will inevitably fail

20 August 2020

The US initiative to restore the sanctions lifted in 2015 against Iran is devoid of legal grounds and will inevitably fail, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova said at a briefing on Thursday.

"The US initiatives to restore the effect of UN Security Council sanctions resolutions against Iran, which were canceled after the conclusion of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) in 2015 to resolve the [situation] around the Iranian nuclear program, are devoid of legal grounds and will inevitably fail," the diplomat said, noting that the Russian position on this issue has been repeatedly brought to different levels.

Threat of crisis in the UN Security Council

Zakharova said that the US intention to restore sanctions against Iran could lead to a serious crisis in the UN Security Council, and Moscow calls on all countries to fight back decisively.

"We are seriously concerned that such actions by Washington, which we characterize as reckless, could lead to a crisis, perhaps very deep, in the Security Council [of the United Nations]. But, unfortunately, it seems to us that our American colleagues are not concerned about this at all. < ... > We call on all countries to fight back decisively, " she said.
