Decree of the US President Donald Trump on recognition of the Golan Heights as the territory of Israel is another step towards the destruction of the international legal framework for resolving the situation in the Middle East. About this in an interview for the TV channel «Russia-24», the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry Maria Zakharova said.
«Unfortunately, this is another step towards the destruction of the international legal framework for resolving the situation in the Middle East. Russia’s position on this issue remains unchanged - the Golan Heights are Syrian territory», the diplomat noted in particular.
We recall that until 1967 the Golan Heights were part of Syria. Most of the territory of the Golan was captured by Israel during the six-day war in 1967.
In 1981, the Knesset unilaterally proclaimed Israel’s sovereignty over this territory. The UN Security Council didn’t recognize this decision.
