About 600,000 Gazans Displaced from Their Homes Due to Escalation

16 October 2023

The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) has reported that the number of internally displaced persons in the Gaza Strip has now reached 600,000.

"The mass displacement of the population from northern to southern Gaza has been ongoing following Israel's aggressive attack. As of Saturday evening, approximately 600,000 internally displaced persons have sought refuge in central and southern Gaza, and their living conditions are deteriorating," the statement reported. It further mentioned that their numbers have seen a significant increase since Saturday, although specific figures were not provided. OCHA also noted that the exact number of internally displaced persons in Gaza City and the northern part of Gaza cannot be determined due to the continuous movement of people.

"All hospitals in Gaza have fuel reserves for only 24 hours of operation. If backup power generators cease to function, the lives of thousands of patients would be at risk," the office stressed.
