Rashad Mohammed al-Alimi, Chairman of Yemen's Presidential Governing Council, has designated Foreign Minister Ahmed Awad bin Mubarak as the new leader of the republic's government. This appointment was announced via a decree posted on the official website of the presidential council.
The outgoing Prime Minister, Maeen Abdulmalik Saeed, who had been at the helm of the government since October 2018, has been appointed as an advisor to the chairman of the presidential council. However, the decree does not indicate who will succeed him in the position of foreign minister.
The conflict between Yemen's government forces and the rebel faction known as "Ansar Allah" (Houthis) has been escalating since August 2014. The situation intensified in March 2015 when a Saudi Arabia-led coalition became involved in the hostilities. The ensuing civil war has resulted in a devastating humanitarian crisis, with the United Nations reporting that over 24 million Yemenis—about 80% of the population—require humanitarian aid. Additionally, the number of internally displaced individuals has surpassed 4 million.
