Syrian President Bashar al-Assad met with Russian Deputy Prime Minister Yuri Borisov in Damascus on Tuesday.
Borisov, on behalf of the Russian leadership, congratulated al-Assad on his convincing victory in the presidential elections, the results of which fully confirmed the political authority and the trust of the population in the course of stabilizing the situation under his leadership as soon as possible.
"In order to monitor the electoral process in Syria there was a representative Russian delegation consisting of members of the Federation Council, the State Duma and the Public Chamber, who highly appreciated the organization of the voting," said the Russian Deputy Prime Minister.
Borisov said a new government would be formed soon. And the Russian side expects it to get to work quickly, especially since the difficult economic situation in Syria requires immediate solutions. "You are well aware of Russia's principled position in favor of the need for unconditional respect for the sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity of Syria, the right of Syrians to determine their own future in accordance with UN Security Council Resolution 2254," the Russian Deputy Prime Minister stressed.
Borisov also assured that Russia remains ready to provide Syria with comprehensive assistance to restore peaceful life in the country. "As you know, we are in close contact with the chairman of the Syrian part of the Russian-Syrian intergovernmental commission Mansour Azzam. The meeting of the co-chairmen of the intergovernmental commission held today allowed us to discuss in detail the state of affairs in bilateral specialized cooperation and to outline the ways of its activation in various fields," he said.
