09 December 2021

Palestine would like to hold a meeting of the Middle East Quartet (Russia, the US, the UN and the EU) at the level of foreign ministers by the end of the year, Palestinian Ambassador to Moscow Abdel Hafiz Nofal said in an interview with the Izvestia newspaper.

"The last meeting of the Quartet was in mid-November [at the level of special envoys]. President [of Palestine] Mahmoud Abbas, in a meeting with [Russian President] Vladimir Putin, noted that we are interested in holding a meeting of the Quartet at the level of foreign ministers in order to start a new stage of dialogue. There is no clear date yet, but we would like to hold the Quartet meeting before the end of this year," the ambassador said.

He recalled that Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov is expected to visit the region next week and, according to Nofal, "the upcoming meeting of the Quartet will also be on the agenda".

Lavrov will go on a working trip to the Middle East and North Africa on December 12. During his tour, he will visit Israel, Palestine, Algeria, and Morocco.
