Armenian President Armen Sargsyan said that he learned about the trilateral statement on Karabakh from the press and did not participate in any discussions. He also said that taking into account people's concerns, he immediately initiates political consultations.
"I learned from the media about the signing of a statement on ending the Karabakh war with the Presidents of Russia and Azerbaijan. I also learned from the media about the conditions for ending the war. As the President of the Republic, unfortunately, I did not discuss this document, I did not take part in any negotiations," reads the statement of Sargsyan on the website of the President of the Republic.
According to him, the settlement of the Karabakh conflict is of national importance and any step, action or decision, "especially the signing of any document" concerning the security interests and rights of Armenia, Artsakh (self-name of Karabakh) and the entire Armenian people "should be subject to comprehensive consultations and discussions".
"I emphasize that the fate of Artsakh, and consequently, the Armenian people, can be decided only with consideration of our national interests and only by national consensus," Sargsyan said.
"Taking into account the deep concern of a large number of people... I immediately initiate political consultations in order to agree on the decisions arising from our agenda for the protection of national interests as soon as possible," he added.
