Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has signed a decree establishing a new government for the Arab Republic, according to a statement from the president’s office, reported by the SANA news agency.
The statement reads, "President Bashar al-Assad has issued a decree to form a new government under the leadership of Mohammad Ghazi al-Jalali." Al-Jalali previously served as Minister of Communications and Technology from August 2014 to July 2016, and was the Deputy Minister of Communications from 2008 to 2014.
Bassam Sabbagh has been appointed as the new Minister of Foreign Affairs, while former Foreign Minister Faisal Mekdad has been named Vice President of the Republic, according to the agency.
Mekdad is tasked with overseeing the implementation of foreign policy and media policy in accordance with the president's directives.
On September 14, the president’s office announced that al-Assad had instructed former Minister of Communications and Technology al-Jalali to form a new cabinet. He replaces Hussein Arnous, who had been Prime Minister since 2020. The new prime minister is expected to present a program to parliament focused on stabilizing the national economy.
