The US is ready to discuss with Russia a new arms control system that will replace START III, Moscow should show a readiness to work together, US President Joe Biden said in a statement released on Monday on the occasion of the opening of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons conference at the United Nations in New York.
"Today, my administration is ready to negotiate promptly on a new arms control system to replace START III, which expires in 2026. <...> Russia must demonstrate that it is ready to resume work with the United States on nuclear arms control," the statement reads.
The US believes discussions on a new arms control system should take place with China's participation.
"China also has a responsibility as a nuclear-weapon state under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and a member of the Nuclear Five to participate in the negotiations" on developing a new arms control system to replace START III, Biden said in the statement.
