Special Presidential Representative President for the Middle East and Africa, Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov discussed with the Ambassador of Yemen to Moscow by Ahmed al-Wahayshi the situation in the Republic with a focus on tasks for a speedy end to the ongoing conflict, the statement of the Russian MFA reads.
Bogdanov received the Yemeni Ambassador in Moscow at his request. "During the conversation, the parties discussed the current situation in Yemen, with an emphasis on the tasks of ending the military-political conflict that has been going on there for the past five years and providing urgent humanitarian assistance to the civilian population of the country," the Foreign Ministry said.
Some topical issues on the bilateral Russian-Yemeni agenda were also touched upon.
The military and political conflict in Yemen between the government and Houthi rebels from the Shiite Ansar Allah movement has been ongoing since 2014. Since March 2015, the government has been supported by a military coalition of Arab countries led by Saudi Arabia. In December 2018, the parties to the conflict in Yemen met for the first time in several years at the negotiating table, which was organized under the auspices of the UN in Stockholm. They managed to reach a number of important agreements, including the exchange of prisoners, a cease-fire in Hodeidah-a port city on the Red sea-and the transfer of it to government control. However, most of the agreements still remain unfulfilled.
