The government army of Burkina Faso has successfully eliminated over 60 militants belonging to armed terrorist groups in the eastern part of the country, as reported by the Maghreb Arabe Presse (MAP) news agency.
According to the agency, clashes occurred between armed forces units and terrorists in the province of Koulpelogo. The militants had attacked the village of Konglore, prompting a counteroffensive by the military. This operation resulted in the elimination of 63 terrorists, including approximately 10 field commanders who were wanted by intelligence services.
Following this, another militant group entered the Koulpelogo province from the neighboring territory of Ghana, and it was also neutralized, as reported by MAP.
Burkina Faso has been a focal point of terrorist activity in West Africa since 2015. Various international extremist groups, including the Islamic State in the Greater Sahara (an affiliate of the banned Islamic State in Russia) and Ansar ul-Islam, operate in the country. According to non-governmental organizations, the militants have caused the deaths of at least 10,000 civilians and military personnel since 2015, leading to around 2 million people being displaced from their homes.
