11 January 2021

Insignificant violations during the early presidential elections in Kyrgyzstan could not affect the final results of the voting, Vasily Volkov, the Head of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) observer mission, said at a briefing on Monday.

"While counting, the CIS observers noted few violations, which, according to the mission, could not have influenced the final result of the elections," said Volkov. The head of the observer mission also stated that the voting was transparent. "CIS observers visited 627 polling stations and noted that the voting process was organized and transparent," he continued.

"During the presidential elections of the Kyrgyz Republic and the referendum on defining the form of government of the Kyrgyz Republic, the electoral bodies provided the conditions for the realization of the right of the citizens to free expression of their will",  the observer summed up.

On January 10, early presidential elections were held in Kyrgyzstan, as well as the referendum, where the citizens were choosing the form of governing the country - presidential or parliamentary. There were 17 candidates running for president. According to the CEC, after processing more than 98% of the polls, Sadyr Zhaparov won with 79.2% of the votes. The front-runner needed more than half of the votes to win in the first round. More than 80% of citizens voted for the presidential form of government.
