The Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) expects complications in the region due to the situation in Uzbekistan. This was stated on Wednesday by a representative of the CSTO secretariat, Alexander Kuznetsov, at the IX "Inforum - Sochi" Southern Forum of Information Security.
"Uzbekistan was one of the CSTO regions of responsibility. <...> there is a forecast of the development, it says that so far it is all extremely unstable, complications are expected. You know that literally in two days there were talks between Russia and Uzbekistan [about the events] that took place there, Russia expressed support. All this will, of course, be considered in the sphere of the CSTO statutory bodies, and there will also be a reaction to it," Kuznetsov said.
The involvement of foreign representatives can be traced to the events in Uzbekistan, where riots broke out earlier because of the constitutional reforms being carried out in the country, Kuznetsov said.
"The events that occurred as a result of attempts to amend [Uzbekistan's] constitution also have a negative impact. It is clear that not only residents of these states are involved, but also representatives of other states who contribute to the negative development of this situation," Kuznetsov said.
On July 1-2, there were mass riots in Karakalpakstan under the pretext of disagreement with the region's changed status in the new version of Uzbekistan's constitution. Authorities have said citizens were misled into taking over local government. Mirziyoyev declared a state of emergency in the region. The head of state also decided not to amend the constitution to deprive Karakalpakstan of the status of a sovereign republic within Uzbekistan and the right to secede by referendum.
