CSTO working on mechanisms to resolve situation between Baku and Yerevan

13 September 2022

The Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO), at the request of Armenia, has been working on employing the organization's mechanisms for settling the situation on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border, CSTO spokesperson Vladimir Zainetdinov told TASS.

“In connection with Armenia's appeal to the CSTO Collective Security Council for assistance, the CSTO Secretariat together with the CSTO Joint Staff organized work to involve CSTO mechanisms to resolve the situation,” the commentary reads.

Zainetdinov stressed that the organization considers the use of force unacceptable. "Only political and diplomatic methods and agreements fixed in statements of leaders of Azerbaijan, Armenia and Russia made on  November 9, 2020, January, 11 and November, 26, 2021, should be used to settle conflicts,” Zaynetdinov noted.

"We highly value the mediation efforts of the Russian Federation in the ceasefire on the line of contact since 9 a.m. on September 13," the secretariat noted.

The organization also expressed deep condolences to the families of the deceased and wished a speedy recovery to the wounded.

Situation at the border

On Tuesday night, the Armenian defense ministry accused the Azerbaijani forces of starting intensive shelling in the direction of the Armenian towns of Goris, Sotq and Jermuk. The Armenian security council held an emergency meeting at which it was decided to ask for help from the Russian Federation to invoke the provisions of the Treaty of friendship, cooperation and mutual assistance, as well as the CSTO and the UN Security Council in connection with the aggravation on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border.

The Azerbaijani defense ministry said that the Armenian armed forces organised a large-scale sabotage on the border between the two countries, mined sections between the positions of Azerbaijani army units and supply roads. The Azerbaijani military took "urgent measures to immediately prevent these acts," the ministry said. Then Azerbaijani news agency Trend, citing its sources, reported that Azerbaijan and Armenia agreed to a cease-fire in the border areas.
