The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Syria strongly condemned the policy of Western sanctions pressure in the context of the coronavirus pandemic.
"Syria calls on the international community to facilitate the early lifting of sanctions against Damascus, given that the coronavirus has spread to all neighboring states. Maintaining illegal unilateral the US and EU sanctions in such a situation is a violation of human rights and contradicts basic norms and principles", the statement reads.
The Syrian Foreign Ministry also expressed solidarity with Iran, Cuba and Venezuela, which are also under sanctions at a time when the entire world is fighting the spread of the coronavirus.
The responsibility for each victim of the coronavirus in these countries, as stressed in the Syrian Foreign Ministry, will be borne by the United States and other Western countries, which "with their sanctions hinder efforts to counter the pandemic that threatens all mankind, and deprive them of the opportunity to receive the necessary assistance".
Officially in Syria to date, no cases of coronavirus infection have been registered. In the world, according to the latest data, more than 200 thousand people have been infected with it in about 160 countries, and more than 8 thousand people died.
