On Wednesday, the Russian delegation headed by the special representative of the Russian president on Syrian settlement Alexander Lavrentyev discussed the situation in Syria with representatives of the Iranian side, the press service of the Iranian Foreign Ministry reported.
"During the talks, the parties discussed the development of the situation in Syria, including the Constitutional Committee, the situation in the country, the Idlib issue, as well as initiatives of both countries aimed at improving the economic and political situation," the report says. The parties also touched upon the issue of Syrian refugees.
On the Iranian side, Senior Assistant to Iranian Foreign Minister for Special Political Affairs Ali Asghar Khaji took part in the talks.
Moscow and Tehran, along with Ankara, are guarantors of the Astana process to normalize the situation in Syria. The previous high-level meeting on Syria in Astana format was held in the capital of Kazakhstan on December 10-11, 2019. The next meeting in this format was previously scheduled for March this year but was postponed because of the coronavirus pandemic.
On July 1, the presidents of Russia, Iran and Turkey held a virtual summit dedicated to the Syrian settlement and discussed the prospects for a face-to-face meeting to be held in Tehran when the epidemic situation allows.
