Egypt Awaits Lavrov's Participation in Anti-Terrorism Ministerial Meeting on the Sidelines of the UN General Assembly

Egypt is hopeful that Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov will attend the upcoming ministerial meeting on counterterrorism, scheduled to take place on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly (UNGA), Egypt’s Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty said during talks with Lavrov in Moscow.

“We are closely collaborating in the fight against terrorism. We coordinate our efforts within the framework of the Global Counterterrorism Forum. I would like to inform you that Egypt currently holds the chair of this platform, and we have a ministerial meeting planned for September 27 on the sidelines of the high-level week of the UN General Assembly in New York. We hope, Mr. Minister, that you will be able to participate in this meeting,” Abdelatty said.

The Egyptian minister also emphasized Egypt’s appreciation of Russia's role in international affairs and its efforts to resolve the situation in the Middle East. “Undoubtedly, there are many issues we will touch upon today, including the development of our bilateral cooperation in trade and economics, education, culture, and tourism, in addition to our regular political consultations,” he continued. “Furthermore, we have a new format for cooperation within the BRICS framework. I would like to stress that we highly value Russia's role in this organization and the support Russia provided for Egypt's accession to the group.”

Abdelatty also noted the strategic partnership agreement between Russia and Egypt, which ensures regular coordination on regional and international agendas. “Russia and Egypt share a long-standing, historic relationship that spans several decades. These are strong ties, built on personal contacts between the leaders of our two countries—President [Vladimir] Putin of Russia and President [Abdel Fattah] el-Sisi of Egypt. Both leaders provide guidance to our foreign ministries, which we implement to strengthen our bilateral cooperation. I would like to emphasize that despite the multiple crises currently unfolding in the Middle East and on the African continent—issues we are actively addressing—I considered my visit to Russia a top priority and was eager to come to Moscow,” Abdelatty concluded.
