Egypt is prepared to host an international conference on the reconstruction of Gaza’s infrastructure once a ceasefire is established, Foreign Minister Badr Abdel Aty announced.
“Egypt is ready to convene an international conference on Gaza’s reconstruction when the circumstances allow, after a ceasefire is implemented,” Abdel Aty said, as reported by Al-Qahera al-Ihbariya. He stressed that it is time for decisive political action to end the violence in Gaza. Cairo also insists that any future agreement include the withdrawal of Israeli forces from the Rafah border crossing and the provision of sufficient humanitarian aid to the enclave.
Currently, negotiations on Gaza are taking place in Doha. Both Qatar's Foreign Ministry and Hamas have stated that the talks have reached their final stage. According to Al-Qahera al-Ihbariya, further rounds of negotiations will be held in Cairo after the current session concludes.
Reuters reported that Tuesday’s Doha talks would involve US President-elect Donald Trump’s special envoy to the Middle East, Steven Witkoff, National Security Council coordinator Brett McGurk, Mossad Chief David Barnea, and Shin Bet Director Ronen Bar.
Al Hadath stated that, if an agreement is reached, the ceasefire in Gaza would not take effect before January 22. Israel reportedly provided a list of Palestinian prisoners it is willing to release, though it excludes Fatah leader Marwan Barghouti, whose release was a key condition set by Hamas.
The draft ceasefire deal reportedly consists of two phases, each lasting 42 days. A significant sticking point remains Israel’s proposed two-kilometer buffer zone along Gaza’s northern and eastern borders, according to Al Hadath.
