31 October 2023

An urgent high-level meeting of the Arab League сouncil is scheduled for November 11 in Riyadh, as announced by Assistant Secretary-General Hossam Zaki.

"The General Secretariat received an official request from Palestine and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to convene an extraordinary session of the Arab League Council at the highest level, under the leadership of Saudi Arabia. The meeting is scheduled for November 11 in Riyadh," the aide stated. Zaki emphasized that the purpose of this high-level meeting is for Arab leaders to "address the continuous Israeli aggression against the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip, which has been ongoing since October 7."

Zaki specified in a comment to Sky News Arabia that both the Saudi and Palestinian versions of the memorandum had been sent to the meeting participants. He noted that there are differences between the Palestinian demands and the Saudi position. He stated, "The proposal is for leaders to engage in a comprehensive discussion of the situation in the lead-up to the meeting." Zaki emphasized that the primary objective of the Arab League Council summit is to prevent the conflict from inflicting further harm on Palestinian citizens.

On his part, Palestinian Permanent Representative to the Arab League  Mohannad Aklouk conveyed to the MENA news agency that the upcoming summit "will send a message to the global community that Israel must be held accountable under international law." He expressed the expectation that the Arab nations will "share the responsibility with the Palestinian leadership and people during this challenging period when Palestinians are enduring acts of genocide, forced displacement, and ethnic cleansing."

On October 28, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas called on Arab leaders to convene an emergency summit with the aim of "halting the Israeli aggression against the Palestinian people."
