Turkish leader Recep Tayyip Erdogan allowed for the possibility to revise relations between Ankara and Damascus after the presidential and parliamentary elections scheduled in Turkey next June.
"In politics, there are no eternal grudges and discontent. When the time comes, you can sit down, evaluate and make a corresponding update. At this time, we as Turkey can reconsider our relations with countries we have problems with on these issues. Especially after the June elections, when we can do it all over again. And, accordingly, we can hopefully continue on our path in this direction," the president said in an interview with Turkish reporters in response to a question about the possibility of reviewing relations with Syria. TRT TV channel quoted him as saying on Thursday.
Following the August 5 talks in Sochi between Presidents Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Vladimir Putin, Turkish media reported that Ankara was discussing the possibility of establishing direct contacts between the Turkish and Syrian leaders. In this connection, Turkish authorities stated that such talks were not planned and that contacts between Ankara and Damascus were being maintained only through special services.
On October 6, after the summit of the European Political Community in Prague, Erdogan said that his personal meeting with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad was out of the question now. It will take place, he said, "when the time comes."
