On April 1, the European Union launches a new mission in the Mediterranean to monitor the implementation of the arms embargo against Libya.
The main task of the mission, which was named IRINI, which translates from Greek as "peace", will be to implement the UN arms embargo through the use of air, satellite and sea routes.
"In particular, the mission will be able to conduct inspections of vessels on the high seas off the coast of Libya suspected of transporting weapons or related materials to and from Libya in accordance with United Nations Security Council resolution 2292 (2016)", the EU Council said in a statement.
In addition, the mission will also perform secondary tasks, such as monitoring and collecting information on the illegal export of oil, crude oil and petroleum products from Libya.
