On February 12, there was a meeting between Farit Mukhametshin, Deputy Chairman of the Federation Council Committee on International Affairs, Deputy Chairman of the Strategic Vision Group “Russia – Islamic World”, and Ramazan Abdulatipov, Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation to the Organization of Islamic Cooperation in Jeddah, at the Federation Council.
In the course of the meeting, the parties focused on the discussion of the Group’s plans for the current year of 2021 and cooperative arrangements for their implementation with active participation of the Permanent Mission of the Russian Federation to the Organization of Islamic Cooperation.
Abdulatipov and Mukhametshin commended the strengthened cooperation between the Strategic Vision Group and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation over the past year, which resulted in number of international events aimed at developing the key aspects of partnership between Russia and OIC member states in the sphere of education, culture and science. A series of commemorative events held with the assistance of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia to mark the 15th anniversary of our country’s accession to the Organization of Islamic Cooperation as an observer demonstrated the significance of cooperation between Russia and the countries of the Islamic world.
Important upcoming events included the Group’s traditional International Economic Summit “Russia – Islamic World: KazanSummit 2021”, the International Muslim Film Festival, the International Forum of Writers and Intellectuals named after Chingiz Aitmatov and a number of youth events, including the OIC Young Diplomats Forum.
As Farit Mukhametshin noted, in accordance with the agreements with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Jeddah will host a retreat of the Strategic Vision Group in October 2021 to establish a new stage in the development of the dialogue and cooperation between Russia and the Islamic world.
Expressing their readiness to work closely together, the parties noted a range of joint activities aimed at promoting the development of inter-parliamentary cooperation between the Federation Council of the Russian Federation and the Parliamentary Union of the OIC member states, and a number of projects, the implementation of which would serve as a good support during the preparation of the World International Conference on Interreligious and Inter-ethnic Dialogue in the Russian Federation in May 2022.
