Foreign Ministry assessed the chances of returning the Iranian nuclear deal to a stable course

14 July 2020

The chances of returning the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) on the Iranian nuclear program to a stable course remain, there are no alternatives to it. Moscow will encourage partners to work together to protect the plan from US attacks, the Russian foreign Ministry said in a statement on the fifth anniversary of the agreement.

The United States earlier withdrew from the nuclear deal with Iran, declaring the restoration of sanctions against Tehran, which in turn announced the suspension of obligations under the agreement.

"The chances of a return Agreement in a sustainable direction are preserved. Russia intends to make every effort to do this, encouraging partners to work together in a meaningful way to find ways to de - escalate and protect the JCPOA from US attacks," the Ministry said in a statement.

"It still has no alternative," the Agency notes, adding that the agenda of the opponents of the JCPOA is focused only on destruction, in order to please their ambitions, they are ready to escalate military and political tensions in the Middle East and provoke a crisis in the UN Security Council in an attempt to solve their election tasks.

"Delays and challenges in implementing the JCPOA do not detract from its achievements," the Russian Foreign Ministry said.

Moscow also called on all JCPOA partners and UN members to "show political will and stand up for" the plan.

In July 2015, Iran and the "six" international negotiators reached an agreement on the settlement of the long-standing problem of the Iranian atom. Months of negotiations concluded with the adoption of a Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), which is completely removed from Iran's previously imposed economic and financial sanctions by the UN Security Council, the US and EU. The agreement also stipulated that the arms embargo would be lifted from Iran within 5 years, and arms deliveries would be possible earlier, but only with the permission of the UN Security Council. The deal in its original form did not last even three years: in May 2018, the US announced a unilateral withdrawal from it and the restoration of strict sanctions against Tehran. However, since only the US formally withdrew from the deal, the rest of its participants must comply with the condition of lifting the arms embargo.
