Moscow favors the stable development of Jordan and wishes the kingdom prosperity, Mikhail Bogdanov, Special Representative of the President for the Middle East and Africa and Deputy Foreign Minister, told RIA Novosti amid reports about the arrest of the king's half brother and a number of officials.
"We stand for stability, for security, it is traditionally a friendly state for us. So we wish it to be prosperous, to have stable conditions for the social and economic development of the kingdom," Bogdanov said.
"We have very good relations with Amman in general and His Majesty King Abdullah II," the Russian Deputy Foreign Minister said.
Hamza ibn al-Hussein, the former Crown Prince and half-brother of the King of Jordan, said Sunday night that he had been placed under house arrest without the ability to make contact and deprived of security. Earlier, the Petra news agency reported that security forces detained the former head of the Jordanian king's office, Bassem Awadallah, who also held ministerial positions, the king's former special envoy to Saudi Arabia, Sharif Hassan Bin Zaid and several other officials. The Jordanian Armed Forces said afterward that they had demanded that the King's half-brother of Jordan stop acting in a way that threatened the security of the kingdom, but they did not explain the details of what happened.
