A naval supply point in Sudan will contribute to the development of military-technical cooperation with Sudan, Russia is interested in strengthening the partnership with this country, said Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova.
The intention to reconsider the decision to establish a Russian military base on the Red Sea was announced earlier by the Chief of Staff of the Sudanese Armed Forces, Muhammad Usman al-Hussein, referring to the fact that the document was adopted by the previous government, but not ratified by Parliament.
"As for our country, we confirm our interest in strengthening partnership with Sudan in various areas, including military and military-technical cooperation, to the development of which, we believe, the agreement on the creation of a logistical support point for the Russian Navy is designed to promote," Zakharova said at a briefing on Thursday.
Zakharova noted that in the context of the transition period, Sudan lacks a legislature with the necessary authority to ratify the agreement. "Accordingly, until this agreement enters into force, individual changes may be made to the text of the agreement by agreement and at the discretion of the parties," she added.
The agreement to establish a Russian naval station in Sudan became known in November 2020, according to the document, the maximum number of personnel of the naval station, whose work is carried out by forces and means of the Russian side, will not exceed 300 people.
