Russia is ready to interact with the new US administration on the issue of saving the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action on the Iranian nuclear program, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova said on Thursday.
"We are ready for close interaction with the JCPOA participants to achieve this goal, as well as constructive interaction on this issue with the new US administration," Zakharova said at a briefing.
The Russian diplomat also noted that Tehran's current actions to renounce its commitments under the JCPOA are within the framework of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons.
"It should be taken into account that all the activities carried out by Iran at the aforementioned sites are carried out under the close supervision of the IAEA and do not go beyond Tehran's obligations under the NPT," Zakharova said.
The Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action concluded in 2015 by the "six" (Britain, Germany, China, Russia, the United States, France) and Iran, which implies the removal of sanctions in exchange for limiting Iran's nuclear program, did not last even three years: in May 2018, the United States announced its unilateral withdrawal from it and the restoration of tough sanctions against Tehran.
Iran in 2019 announced a gradual reduction of its commitments under the agreement, abandoning restrictions on nuclear research, centrifuges, and uranium enrichment levels.
