The question of Russian recognition of the Taliban provisional government in Afghanistan is premature for the time being, Russian foreign ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said at a briefing on Thursday.
"At the current stage, raising the issue of Russia's official recognition of the new Afghan authorities is premature," she said.
"At the same time, we believe that specific practical steps by Kabul to meet the expectations of the international community and regional partners, in particular in the formation of an ethno-politically balanced government, the continued fight against terrorism, drug crime, respect for fundamental rights and freedoms of citizens, can indeed have a stimulating effect on the above processes," Zakharova added.
