Gintsburg says Sputnik V will protect against new strain of coronavirus

"Sputnik V will protect against a new variant of COVID-19 identified in Britain, Alexander Gintsburg, the director of the Gamaleya Center, which developed the vaccine, told RIA Novosti.

"Of course it will protect ... There is no indication that it won't," he said.

Earlier, a new mutation of the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus was discovered in the United Kingdom. On Saturday, Britain's advisory council on new and emerging respiratory viral threats confirmed that the strain is spreading very rapidly and requires the public to be even more cautious.

Although the new variant of the virus may be 70% more contagious than the usual variant, there is no indication yet that it is more dangerous in terms of deaths or hospitalizations.

More than 30 countries have already suspended or restricted traffic to Great Britain. Some states, including Greece and Cyprus, have imposed a mandatory quarantine for all air passengers arriving from Britain. Russia is stopping flights for a week.

"Sputnik V" is the world's first registered vaccine for the prevention of COVID-19, developed by the Gamaleya Research Center. The vaccine is based on a studied and validated human adenovirus vector platform, the important advantages of which are safety, efficacy and absence of long-term adverse effects.
