The head of the Muslim community of Spain, the Chairman of the Islamic Commission of the country Riay Tatary Bakry died from a coronavirus. It is reported that he served as the Imam of a mosque in the Tetuan district of Madrid. On March 31, he was admitted to a hospital in the capital.
Bakry was 72 years old and has five children. Now the wife of a religious figure is in a serious condition with a coronavirus in the hospital.
The Chairman of the RMC and the Religious Board of Muslims of the Russian Federation, Ravil Gainutdin, expressed his condolences on Bakry's death.
"The role of Dr. Riay in the development of Muslim communities and institutions in modern Spain is huge and undeniable. His authority and wisdom have been, in many ways, the key to the successful development of the state-Islamic dialogue in Spain over the past decades. Born and raised in Damascus, Dr. Riay Tatary Bakry did a lot to consolidate the Muslims of his second homeland, to protect their interests and to unite their social efforts," the report says.
