The Investigative Committee opened a criminal case after the death of a Russian officer in Syria and the wounding of two more soldiers, according to the Agency's website.

The incident occurred the day before near Deir ez-Zor: an improvised explosive device went off on the side of the road along which the convoy was returning after a humanitarian action. A senior military adviser with the rank of Major General was seriously injured, and doctors were unable to save him.

"The IC investigators, who are currently serving in Syria, will establish all the details of the criminal attack. < ... > It is not only a matter of duty to identify those responsible for the death and injury of our servicemen, but also a matter of honor," the IC said in a statement.

Alexander Bastrykin, the head of the department, stressed that every crime against Russian military personnel in Syria is investigated "thoroughly with the involvement and assistance of the competent authorities of this state in accordance with previously reached agreements."

He also expressed his condolences to the relatives of the deceased.
