The Islamabad High Court has granted bail to Pakistan's former Prime Minister and founder of the opposition party Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), Imran Khan, according to reports by Dawn.
Khan was released after posting two bail bonds, each amounting to 1 million Pakistani rupees ($3,611). He and his wife, Bushra Bibi, were arrested on July 13 over allegations of improperly selling foreign gifts. While Bushra Bibi had already secured bail, Khan remained in custody until now.
The charges involve the alleged illegal sale of state gifts, including seven luxury watches from Graff and Rolex and ten pieces of diamond and gold jewelry. These items were reportedly sold by the couple instead of being deposited into Pakistan’s state gift repository, Toshakhana.
Imran Khan served as Pakistan's Prime Minister from 2018 to 2022. His tenure ended prematurely on April 10, 2022, when he was removed through a parliamentary vote of no-confidence, one year before his term was set to expire.
The investigation into Khan escalated after he disclosed classified information on March 27, 2022. He publicly claimed to have received a cipher from Pakistan's ambassador in Washington, alleging US officials had recommended his removal due to his pro-Russia stance following his visit to Moscow in February 2022.
