The authorities of the Indonesian city of Probolinggo (East Java province) forced violators of the restriction regime due to the coronavirus to ride in hearses that are used to transport the dead from COVID-19, The Jakarta Post reports.
"In one of the local markets, we found about 50 sellers and buyers who refused to wear protective masks," Ugas Irvanto, head of the special government group for fighting the coronavirus, told reporters. "As a measure of social education, it was decided to place them in hearses that are used for transporting urns with the ashes of those who died from COVID-19." According to the head of the special group, "an educational conversation on security measures was held in cars with violators."
In addition, a representative of the local administration said that "some stalls were closed in the market, the owners of which violated the restrictions."
East Java province is the second largest province after Jakarta in terms of the number of people infected with the coronavirus. Over the past two weeks, the country has seen a record increase in cases almost every day. The authorities explain this by increasing the scale of testing and believe that in September Indonesia will reach a peak in the number of infected people. In total, since the beginning of the pandemic, more than 197 thousand cases of infection have been confirmed in the country, and more than 8.1 thousand people died.
