In his address, President Widodo referenced an Indonesian saying that promotes achieving victory without seeking approval or humiliating others. He called for mutual respect and cooperation among ASEAN member states.
Indonesia, currently holding the ASEAN presidency in 2023, is hosting a week-long series of events. The gathering began with a four-day meeting of ASEAN foreign ministers in Jakarta. The upcoming East Asia Summit and ASEAN Regional Security Forum, to be attended by Russia's Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, are anticipated to focus on promoting Russian interests in the Asia-Pacific region while advocating for a balanced, equitable, and responsive regional architecture of interstate relations.
Founded in 1967, ASEAN brings together ten member countries: Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.
