Iran Calls US the Leading Interferer in Other Countries' Affairs

06 September

Iran has accused the United States of being a global leader in illegal interference in the internal affairs of sovereign nations, asserting that Washington has no moral ground to accuse other countries of such actions. Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Nasser Kanani made this statement in response to US Attorney General Merrick Garland's allegations of Tehran's involvement in US presidential elections.

Kanani criticized the US government, claiming, "The US government, which is a leader in illegal interference in the internal affairs of other independent states and has a long record of such destructive actions, will not be able to shift its internal problems and crises to other countries by accusing them of this [illegal interference in presidential elections]." The Iranian diplomat, speaking through the Foreign Ministry’s Telegram channel, dismissed the accusations as biased and unfounded, aimed primarily at a domestic audience.

On September 4, Garland had claimed that Iranian attempts to interfere in the US presidential election were increasing, allegedly targeting the campaign of Republican candidate Donald Trump. Earlier, in an August 20 joint statement, the FBI, the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, and the US Infrastructure and Cybersecurity Agency alleged that Iran had engaged in cyber operations aimed at meddling with the campaigns of both Trump and Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris. Tehran has repeatedly denied these accusations.
