Iran's Acting Foreign Minister Ali Bagheri Kani has emphasized the positive influence of Russia and China in fostering political stability and security in the Middle East.
In an interview with Newsweek, Bagheri Kani stated, "We believe that Russia and China are making significant efforts to strengthen mutual political trust in the region while also working diligently to enhance economic ties and cooperation."
The diplomat pointed to the United States' unilateral approach as the primary source of regional tensions and crises. "Over recent decades, the illegal US presence in Iraq and Afghanistan has not only resulted in numerous atrocities, casualties, and extensive damage but has also led to increased instability, terrorism, and drug trafficking," he asserted.
Bagheri Kani particularly commended China's role as a mediator in the talks that led to the restoration of diplomatic relations between Iran and Saudi Arabia. "China has played a crucial role in reviving ties between Iran and Saudi Arabia, two key countries and neighbors in the region," he emphasized.
The relationship between Riyadh and Tehran had deteriorated significantly since March 2015, following the Saudi-led coalition's military operation against Yemen's Houthi movement, Ansar Allah. Tensions further escalated in January 2016 when protesters, angered by Saudi Arabia's execution of Shiite cleric Sheikh Nimr al-Nimr, attacked the Saudi embassy in Tehran and its consulate in Mashhad. This incident prompted Saudi Arabia to sever diplomatic ties with Iran.
However, on March 10, 2023, Iran and Saudi Arabia reached an agreement to restore diplomatic relations and reopen embassies within a two-month timeframe, marking a significant shift in regional dynamics.
