Iran increased its capacity to enrich uranium on the background of the sanctions the US plans

20 August 2020

The Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI), against the background of Washington's plans to restore sanctions against Tehran, announced major steps to increase the capacity of uranium enrichment.

Earlier, President Donald Trump said that the US Secretary of State on his behalf would go to the UN to notify the organization of the beginning of the procedure for restoring anti-Iranian sanctions under resolution 2231. The US says that the sanctions will take effect 30 days after the official notification of the UN. The State Department said that sanctions against Iran would include a ban on uranium enrichment.

"Whether the dispute resolution mechanism will be activated (through which it is possible to restore sanctions) or the current situation will continue, in any case, the Atomic Energy Organization has made great steps to ensure (indicator in) 190 thousand EPR," the agency wrote on Twitter.

The Supreme Leader of Iran, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, after the US withdrawal from the nuclear deal in 2018, ordered that the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) immediately began preparations for uranium enrichment at the level of 190 thousand EPR (a unit of work on isotope separation, which is one of the indicators of the capacity of centrifuges). Tehran stressed that the increase in uranium enrichment capacity would not go beyond the framework of the nuclear deal and that the country's nuclear activities were peaceful.
