09 February 2021

Iran is considering the possibility of joint production with Russia of a vaccine against COVID-19 for export to the Persian Gulf countries, Mohammad Reza Shanesaz, deputy head of the Islamic Republic's Ministry of Health and head of the Drug and Food Control Organization, told RIA Novosti on Tuesday.

"The main step in this cooperation with Russia is to meet Iran's needs for vaccines as soon as possible, and the next goal is to export these vaccines. Several Iranian companies, after familiarizing themselves with the capacity and infrastructure of the Russian manufacturer, have confirmed that they can provide the appropriate quality and level of the vaccine production process," Shanesaz said.

According to him, "the capabilities of Iranian companies will help increase and expand the production capacity of the Russian vaccine".

"Iran, working together with Russian companies, given its strategic geographic location, can meet the needs of both the Persian Gulf countries, with which we have friendly relations, and other countries of the eastern region. It will be a win-win partnership for everyone involved," the deputy minister noted.
