Iranian Foreign Ministry: talks on return to JCPOA continue through mediators

03 October 2022

Negotiations on returning to the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action on Iran's nuclear program (JCPOA) between the US and Iran are continuing through the EU coordinator and other mediators, Nasser Kanani, spokesperson for the Foreign Ministry of the Islamic Republic of Iran (IRI), said on Monday during his press conference.

"Issues such as lifting sanctions on Iran and returning to the nuclear deal are being discussed through indirect talks with the participation of the EU coordinator and other mediators," Nasser Kanani pointed out, as quoted by the Young Journalists Club news agency. - "On the margins of the recent UN General Assembly session, there were both bilateral and multilateral [indirect] talks between Iran and the United States through mediators such as Enrique Mora and some high-level representatives of other countries. The Iranian foreign ministry spokesman did not explain which states acted as mediators.

Nasser Kanani also noted that Iran "remains committed to achieving a lasting agreement," but warned the negotiating parties against "interpretations that could hinder the implementation of the terms of the future deal."

Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian told Al-Monitor on September 27 that the United States, on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, had offered Iran to hold direct talks on restoring the JCPOA. However, the foreign minister stressed that Iran is in no hurry to agree to such a format, as they "need to understand that this will change the course of the game." According to Abdollahian, Tehran also sees no need for a new round of indirect talks with the participation of European mediators, but will not abandon them.

The JCPOA was signed with Iran in 2015 to address the crisis over its nuclear development by the permanent UN Security Council five and Germany. Previous US President Donald Trump decided in 2018 to withdraw from the arrangement. Current US leader Joe Biden has repeatedly signaled a willingness to bring Washington back into the nuclear deal. Russia, Britain, Germany, China, the US and France have been negotiating with Iran in Vienna since last April to restore the JCPOA to its original form.
