Iranian President Extends Invitation to Malaysian PM for Tehran Visit

Iran's President Ebrahim Raisi has extended an invitation to Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim to visit Tehran, reciprocating with a return invitation to Kuala Lumpur, Foreign Minister of the Islamic Republic Hosein Amir Abdollahian announced this during a press conference following a meeting with his Malaysian counterpart Zambry Abdul Kadir.

 

"The Iranian president extended an invitation to the Malaysian prime minister for a visit to Tehran, and in response, an invitation for a visit to Kuala Lumpur was extended. We are coordinating the scheduling of visits and discussions between political leaders from both nations via diplomatic channels," - Abdollahian conveyed, as reported by the Fars news agency. - "Furthermore, as part of our consultations, we reached an agreement to convene a session of the joint Iran-Malaysia Economic Commission in Tehran. Additionally, Malaysian Higher Education Minister Mohamed Khaled Nordin is set to visit the Islamic Republic in the coming month."

 

Abdollahian also highlighted that Tehran and Kuala Lumpur have achieved an agreement concerning a prisoner exchange. "In the initial phase of executing this arrangement, our proposal entails exchanging Malaysian citizens detained in Iran for Iranian nationals held in Malaysian custody. We hold the hope that this exchange can transpire at the earliest convenience," affirmed the Iranian foreign minister.

 

The Malaysian foreign minister embarked on a three-day visit to Tehran, arriving on Monday. This visit marks Zambry Abdul Kadir's first trip to the Islamic Republic since assuming office in November 2022.
